For many years I flipped through all the different off road magazines, looking at all the Jeeps and trucks that they would feature. But the pages that would really catch my eye were the stories about the different desert races going on around the states and Mexico. Nothing is cooler than an unlimited Trophy Truck throwing dirt thirty feet in the air, or a Class 11 Volkswagen Beetle bouncing through the desert.

Dan Installs a Mile Marker Winch on His Chevy

With all the upgrades done I noticed that I was getting stuck more frequently, so a winch was the next logical step and I decided on the Mile Marker Sl12000 electric winch (MIL76-50152).

I installed the winch in the rear, since my off-roading includes a lot of mud bogging. I utilized the hidden hitch, which was already on my truck, and fabricated a mount for the winch along with D-ring mounts for anchor points. Having the winch gave me peace of mind so that I wouldn’t have to rely on and/or hope that someone could pull me out! This is truly a must have in order to pull yourself out of a jam. If you can’t spring the cash for a winch, then having a recovery strap is a must-have accessory, such as the Pro Comp recovery strap (exp430000).

Off-Roading on Twin Cone Trail

The Trip:

Twin Cone is a nice moderately rated, in and out trail that not many folks venture out to. There are seasonal closures of the trail because of snow. The trail starts at just over 10,000 feet in elevation at the top of Kenosha Pass off of Hwy 285, SW of Denver. This trail meanders through some beautiful country on a nice but narrow dirt road (boring, right? Not so fast). Read more

ProComp and 4Wheel Parts helped us put together our current Chevy Silverado 1500, which will tow our Airstream Trailer “command center” to such sites as the Everglades and Yellowstone for site and animal protection campaigns.

MSD Ignition & ARB Locker Installations for Dan’s Chevy

After my intake manifold and camshaft project, I decided my next project would be swapping out the OEM ignition system. I selected an MSD Ignition and their recommendation was to go with the 6al (MSD6200) ignition box, a coil (MSD8226), and the accompanying spark plug wires (MSD31419).

Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach 2010

The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach has become a tradition for several 4 Wheel Parts employees. It’s a week when the very same streets we drive to work on every day are shut down to showcase some of the best drivers in the world.

Every year on the Thursday before the race, things get kicked off with a Hall of Fame ceremony that is always attended by famous drivers and can be attended by anyone walking off the street. This year Michael Andretti and Danny Sullivan both got inducted into the Hall of Fame. Sitting in the stands were Al Unser Jr. and Marco Andretti.

Trail & Street Fix for Jeep JKs that have VSC Issues after Installing a Lift Kit

Jeep JKs have a very sophisticated computer monitoring system that does a continuous check while driving to ensure your ABS brake system and the Vehicle Stability System are operating properly. Adding lift kits and larger tires can affect the way the system gets its information.

After installing my lift kit, while driving to get an alignment, my Jeep went nuts. My steering wheel was off center, causing the VSE to engage. The Jeep computer thinks I am turning but the wheels are going straight. It triggers the brakes to apply, throwing the Jeep into an uncontrollable spin. Here is why….

Land Speed Racing At El Mirage

Since 1948, the SCTA (Southern California Timing Association) has held speed trials on the dry lake bed of El Mirage, CA. The course is a 1.3-mile drag strip on the dirt. Racers are trying to beat a top speed record that has been previously set.

I have been going to the dry lake bed since I was a kid with my dad (an old hot rodder) and I have been a huge fan for just as long. The SCTA has classes for everything from a blown roadster to a 50cc motorcycle to experimental jet cars. This past year, I decided I needed to race on the legendary course.

Dan Goes Off-Roading in Azusa Canyon

Living in Los Angeles County doesn’t provide me with many off roading locations. However, I did discover Azusa Canyon, which is located on the outskirts of LA County in the Los Angeles National Forest off the 10 East near the Foothills.
