Security First: Key Accessories to Protect 4x4sJanuary 12th, 2016 by David Beran
Trucks, Jeeps and SUVs sold like hotcakes last year and overall the automotive industry enjoyed its best year since 2000, selling 17.5 million vehicles. Pickups are the equivalent of signature buttermilk hotcakes, with Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverados posting year-over-year December gains of 15% and 9%, respectively. Aftermarket security accessories are following suit with solid sales gains as consumers look to keep their investments protected.
Wheel locks, winch locks, light locks and locking boxes are among the products keeping rigs safe. Jeep Cherokees and Grand Cherokees are consistently in the top 10 of most stolen vehicle lists. F-Series and Silverado trucks number among the most stolen and recovered vehicles and their parts are at risk, too. Here’s a look at four state of the art security products on the market that protect 4×4 parts.
Locking Lug Nuts/Bolts from McGard
Combining durability with security, McGard locking lug nuts and bolts protect wheels and look great doing it for long durations. In heavily traveled urban areas, wheels are often targeted by thieves and rural settings have their drawbacks, too (less lighting, lighter traffic). The hardware is backed by a lifetime guarantee and lug nuts are constructed of restricted chemistry steel made only for McGard. The company’s locks and lug nuts are engineered to meet or surpass the maximum OEM proof load standards: 135,000 – 160,000 PSI.
Adventure Box from Smittybilt
Lockable storage is nothing new, but Smittybilt’s approach is a customized container for camping supplies, tools or recovery gear. The Adventure Box is 46 x 16 x 16 inches and made of 16-gauge steel. It’s perfect for organizing and EPDM rubber gaskets keep all stored items dry as well as safe. Other features are spring-loaded D-ring anchor points, an interior LED light, gas-charged struts for assisted opening and all the hardware for mounting to a flat surface is included. The box fits snugly in the bed of a truck, but has convenient handles so it can be removed and carried to a campsite to easily access contents.
Winch Lock from Factor 55
Generally, thieves target parts and accessories they can quickly and easily detach and removing a winch is a labor intensive endeavor. If your Jeep or truck is in a dark, remote area it could be at risk. Factor 55’s winch locks have a locking security bolt and corresponding key. The bolts replace 3/8-inch winch bolts and are made out of zinc-plated carbon steel. The head bolt features a proprietary key pattern so it can’t be removed with regular screwdrivers or pliers.
Every Factor 55 product is designed and manufactured in the United States with cutting-edge CAD (Computer Aided Design) and analysis tools.
Light Security Nut Kits from Rigid Industries
The saying is “an ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure” and paying a nominal fee to protect premium lights on your rig is a bargain. The Security Nut Kit employs custom keyed locking nuts compatible with the majority of aftermarket mounting options. Rigid also offers Security Kits (for A, D, E, HD, Q, RDS, SR, SRM/SRQ Series LED and HD light groups) with nuts, bolts and a key to protect lights. The hardware is easy to install and reasonably priced.
