Don’t Wait, Replace That Standard Hitch Pin

January 12th, 2011 by admin

Anderson Hitch For the past few years I have had the pleasure of using Andersen Manufacturing’s adjustable Rapid Hitch to tow my toys around without incident…until a few weeks ago. I had always meant to replace the standard hitch pin with a good locking one but for some reason never got around to it.

Well, after being on the truck for five years, the pin somehow fell out and the entire hitch pulled out of the receiver, disconnecting and dropping a 10,000lb toyhauler on the freeway at 60mph. Thankfully, I always double up on the safety chains and they held until we pulled over. By “we” I mean me and my girlfriend, who was driving (I was asleep in the passenger seat with a broken foot).

She didn’t panic and slowly decelerated onto the shoulder without incident. After some spontaneous engineering that would make MacGyver jealous, we got the hitch back into the receiver and secured it with a 3/8 extension and a Snap On ratchet to hold it in place; it was redneck rigging at its best. Even though everything worked out okay, the moral of the story is pay attention to the little things, always safety chain your trailer, don’t be cheap, and use high quality towing accessories whenever possible, especially when it comes to co-drivers!

  1. She didn’t panic!….sounds like a keeper to me.

  2. Definitely a keeper…when she crashed her dirt bike and went over the bars, instead of crying or complaining she apologized for slowing us down…that’s when I knew 🙂
