Out of Africa: Pickup Trucks and SUVs

May 11th, 2015 by David Beran

When most people think of 4×4 production plants, places like Detroit and Toledo spring to mind. Even Audi’s hometown of Ingolstadt, Germany and cities in Japan could be on the short list. It’s time to add Ghana to that list.

African Kantanka Automobile Company is producing three different SUVs and four pickups at their Gomoa Mpota assembling plant. The Kantanka brand went commercial earlier this year and is described as the most promising one emerging from Africa.

Off Roading on Twin Cone Trail

    Date: July 29, 2010

Trail: Twin Cone located in Park County, Colorado

    Trail Leaders:
Tom & Traci McCready in a 1990 Jeep Comanche with 6.5 inch lift and 33×12.50×15 Goodyear MTRs

    Background on trail leaders:

Tom has been the president of South Park 4×4 Club for the past 8 years and is an ASE Master Mechanic. Traci is the Secretary/Treasurer of South Park, a retired firefighter, and a hunting/fishing guide. Tom and Traci have over 20 years of off road experience each.

    The Trip:

Off Roading on Twin Cone Trail

Twin Cone is a nice moderately rated, in and out trail that not many folks venture out to. There are seasonal closures of the trail because of snow. The trail starts at just over 10,000 feet in elevation at the top of Kenosha Pass off of Hwy 285, SW of Denver. This trail meanders through some beautiful country on a nice but narrow dirt road (boring, right? Not so fast). Read more

    Greg’s Glamis Trip of Destruction

    broken ankle

The Glamis trip last weekend was full of destruction. Not only did I break my ankle, but I broke my front driveshaft too. Apparently spooling up to 40psi at 3000rpm and launching 38″ tires in 4wd on pavement is bad for u-joints.

    Off-Roading in Moab Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

    May 5th, 2010 by admin

I am a member of the Red Rock 4 Wheel Club in Moab. Each year I help out by assisting on trails as a guide and helping other off road enthusiasts over obstacles they may be unsure of. This year on “Big Saturday” I was a part of the team assisting 38 Jeeps on Moab Rim Trail. It is rated 4 on a scale of 5 – not an easy run, but not the hardest either.

The second obstacle on the trail is the “C” turn and it has two phases. The first part is a 3-step staircase. The second phase has several steps but they’re smaller and easier to climb. For the first phase, you line up your Jeep towards the left on the staircase and ease up over the 3 steps. Sometimes you get a little wheel spin if your tires don’t grip the slick rock. Some shorter wheel base Jeeps have to bump the throttle a bit to get up over the last rock step.

    Riding at Dumont Dunes

    March 30th, 2010 by admin

I’ve been blogging information about where to ride, but I haven’t included any pictures or details so I figured I’d fill in the blanks a little. Looking through my picture folders, I realized I need to take more pictures and you probably do too. Well, here are a few snapshots of good times in Dumont Dunes.

    Summer Off-Roading Spots

    March 24th, 2010 by admin

Once summer is here, most people put away their OHVs and find something else to do until it cools off, but you don’t have to! There are plenty of great summer riding spots. A few of my favorites are Lake Arrowhead, Hungry Valley, Azusa Canyon, and Pismo Beach.

    Winter Off-Roading in So Cal

    March 18th, 2010 by admin

So it’s wintertime and many popular OHV areas are snowed in or closed. Don’t be discouraged – some of the best spots are only accessible in the winter! Places such as Jawbone Canyon, Death Valley, El Mirage, Johnson Valley, Ocotillo Wells, and Stoddard Valley are all located in desert climates, which are far too hot in the summer months.
