Jeff Upgrades His Ford F-150

I started lifting trucks when I was 17 in my parents’ driveway. I started with a 1991 Ranger, installing a 6-inch Superlift kit and 3-inch body lift with 35-inch tires. I then sold that and graduated to an ’86 Toyota. I put about 12 inches of lift on it with 39.5-inch boggers.

My desire for a full size truck put me in my current truck: an F-150. It has a 6-inch Pro Comp lift with Bilstein shocks in the front and Rancho RS9000 Reservoirs in the rear. I went with Pro Comp for the solid reputation of reliability, since the truck is also my daily driver. I added a 3-inch Performance Accessories body lift because I had to have 37-inch tires. I see so many trucks with 35-inch tires and I wanted to stand out a little.

For tires I added 37×12.50×17 ProComp Xtreme Muds. The Pro Comp XT MT is a great looking tire. They have a nice aggressive sidewall look but still have the ride and reliability of a mud terrain tire. This is my second set of these tires. I get a great ride, a mild hum to them, and good mileage. The wheels are the new Fuel Hostage. I have had polished and chrome wheels in the past, but for this set I wanted something different. I chose the Hostage wheel because of the unique but clean look. I went for the “blackout” look because it is low maintenance but still looks good.

With the 37-inch tires I put on my 5.4 liter Ford, it needed more power. I geared the truck to 4:10 with G/2 gears. I do a lot of freeway driving so I sacrificed a little takeoff power to keep my RPMs lower on the freeway. I chose G/2 gears because of the great reputation for fitment and no noise. I also added the Edge CS products for my programming needs. This is a real trick unit. Besides the three levels of performance gains, it recalculated my computer for the larger tires and gear ratio. The programmer comes with an optional dash mount to give a look like it belongs on the dash. It helps me monitor everything on my truck including miles per gallon, RPMs, MPH, engine temps, and almost anything else you can think of.

I also added an aFe Dry Flow Stage 2 air intake system along with the aFe throttle body spacer. I chose aFe because I needed solid horsepower and gas mileage gains, and the dry flow filter makes it extremely low maintenance.

To gain as many MPGs as possible, I added the Fitch Fuel Catalyst. By adding this in-line fuel additive system, I was able to get an extra 20 to 30 miles between fill ups and it also serves as a fuel additive to deliver a higher and cleaner octane level. The Fitch system comes in really handy when gas prices go up to $3.50 or more a gallon.

Gibson headers and a Gibson free flow cat-back system were next on the list. Other accessories are Nu Image silver instrument clusters to match my truck, Nifty catch all floor mats, a Lund soft folding tonneau cover, and a Street Scene stainless honey comb grille insert. I chose the carpet mats to give it more of a stock look. The tonneau cover is light and extremely easy to install and uninstall. The SS grille is great looking, easy to install, and was a great alternative to the classic billet style grilles.

  1. How much the lift and body lift cost ?

  2. The Pro Comp lift kit would run around a thousand dollars. The body lift is around 200 dollars. Together it makes for a good combo to run 37 inch tires

  3. What kind of gas mileage are you getting with this set up? I’m looking at doing something similar and was trying to get all the details.

  4. I would get around 17 to 18 mpg’s on the free way. I geared it kind of high with the 410 to keep my RPM’s lower on the free way.
