Pro Comp Tire & Wheel Upgrade for Marcos’ 2004 2WD Toyota Tacoma Pre Runner

Toyota Tacoma Pre Runner 2WD

I did not go big on my 2004 2WD Toyota Tacoma Pre Runner. This truck came with 16” steel wheels and 265/7016, which were somewhat of an eyesore. Since my truck is black with front and rear chrome bumpers, my first and only choice was PXA8089 16×8 Pro Comp wheels on Pro Comp 265/75r16 XTreme Mud Terrain tires, along with a set of Gorilla spline lug nuts.

Pro Comp Tires & XTreme Alloy Wheels

The tires are taller and wider, and the wheels came with a 4-5/8 inch backspacing to easily clear a four piston caliper (oversized). The rule of thumb here is to stick with the same stock size diameter package or an inch bigger (in this case 17×9 on 265/75r17 if I wanted to).

Never go down on size. Save yourself some headache. Fifteen inches would not have cleared the calipers; then I would have been stuck with a 15” package. I had minor inner fender rubbing so to alleviate that I installed a spacer kit.

  1. hey Marcus, you got that truck looking good, I have a 2000 tundra and was looking for some different wheels I like these I couldn’t decide if i wanted polished aluminun wheels or what. now that I see these wheels on your truck I think I’ll go with a similar wheel where I can paint the centers to match the truck (dark metalic green). Where did you get your quad piston calipers? Thats about the only thing I don’t like about my truck and thats the brakes!! And just to let you know I put a K&N cold air kit and dual exhaust on my tundra and it made a big difference in throttle response and torque plus it sounds great I don’t know what engine you have but you might want to look into it. Keep up the mods. looks great!!!!

  3. My Toyota Tacoma came with stock 4 piston calipers, which limit me on the selection of wheels. Because of this I had to find a 4″ to 4-1/2 back spacing. Thanks for your reccomendation and comment. I already have a regular K/N filter. My truck is equiped with a 2.7 liter engine. In regards to your wheel situation, stick with chrome if you live where you get heavy snow. 17×9 or bigger with a 4-1/2 back spacing would be your best bet. Go with 285/70r17 tire, and a front leveling kit would be recommended if you do not have one yet. Post some pictures after you color the center caps green!
